How it works
How your appointment runs.
Your first appointment starts with a full history — development, medical, school, and how the person communicates — then a check that matches the age and the issue. Kids' checks use validated tools (CELF, PLS, DEAP, Renfrew, TROG-2, YARC and similar) alongside watching how they communicate in conversation, play, and school-style tasks. Adult checks after stroke or brain injury use the Western Aphasia Battery, Boston Naming Test, and looking at connected speech. Swallowing checks follow the standard nerve and mouth-muscle screen with trials of different food and drink textures using the standard texture system.

Common questions
Questions we get asked a lot.
My child is two and not yet talking. Is it too early to come in?
No. The evidence for early intervention with late talkers under three is among the strongest in the field. We work out where the child sits against typical milestones, look for any warning signs of a language disorder underneath, and set up a parent-coaching program tailored to your family. Many under-threes respond to a short course of parent coaching alone.
How is stuttering treated in young kids versus older clients?
Under-sixes are treated with the Lidcombe Program — parent-delivered at home, with daily severity ratings and short verbal responses to stuttered and stutter-free speech, plus weekly sessions with us until fluency is stable. School-age and adult clients use Camperdown or related programs that work on fluency and the thoughts around it. Which program suits depends on age, the stutter pattern, and what the client wants from it.
How does a communication device get set up?
A trial of low-tech and high-tech systems matched to the person's motor, sensory, and thinking profile, and to the people and places that actually matter. Once the right system's picked, it's prescribed with a written report, the family and support people are trained, and we review how it's going at agreed intervals. The trial runs against current Australian and international device systems.
What does adult therapy after stroke or brain injury cover?
Language loss (with constraint-induced and other targeted approaches), slurred speech, speech-planning problems, thinking-and-communication, and swallowing management. We work alongside the medical and rehab team — neurology, OT, physio, and the swallowing-investigation pathway where needed. Goals are practical and named with the client and family.
When does telehealth work, and when doesn't it?
Telehealth has strong evidence for adult language and speech therapy after stroke, parent coaching for early language, device follow-up, and school-age language and reading work. Swallowing checks, device trials, complex kids' assessment, and most early-intervention first appointments are in person. We pick the mode based on the case, not what's convenient.
