Why exercise physiology

What exercise physiology actually does.

EP is exercise prescribed like medicine. ESSA-accredited and the right call for chronic disease, cancer recovery, getting back to strength after surgery, and the long rehab arcs that don't fit inside a physio block.

How it works

How your appointment runs.

Your first assessment starts with the medical picture — your diagnosis, other conditions, medications, any surgery you've had, and what your GP or specialist has written. Recent test results, scans, and any heart, cancer, or surgical clearances all get read into the plan.

Common questions

Questions we get asked a lot.

  • How long before I see real change?

Most chronic-disease and rehab programs show measurable change across a focused training block. Cancer rehab and ongoing-pain programs take longer, with sessions spaced out. We re-test at agreed milestones.

  • How's EP different from physio?

Physio addresses fresh injuries and pain with hands-on work and exercise. EP takes over for the longer build-back once the painful stage has settled, and is the main discipline for chronic disease, cancer recovery, and heart rehab. The two work together a lot.

  • How's EP different from a personal trainer?

An EP is a four-year university-trained clinician registered with ESSA, qualified to assess and prescribe exercise for diagnosed medical conditions, injuries, and chronic disease. Personal training is an unregulated industry credential. EP is the recognised discipline for medical exercise.

  • I've had a heart event, cancer treatment, or surgery — is exercise safe?

Yes, with the right dose. These are core scope. If there's a recent event or things are unstable, the EP checks in with your cardiologist, oncologist, or surgeon before stepping the load up. Any specific things to avoid get written into your plan.

  • What does the assessment actually measure?

Heart capacity, strength, how things move, and balance and function tests — picked for what predicts the outcome you're chasing. The numbers set the dose and let us track change. It's not a fitness test.
