Why occupational therapy

What occupational therapy actually does.

OT is for day-to-day life — what it asks of you, and how to close the gap when illness, injury, disability, or developmental difference gets in the way. Kids' sensory, hand therapy, equipment and home mods, cognitive rehab, and capacity assessments all under one roof.

How it works

How your appointment runs.

Your first appointment length depends on what you're after. A clinic-based intake for therapy is shorter than a full capacity assessment, which involves observation, validated tests, and getting the right collateral info to write a report to the proper standard.

Common questions

Questions we get asked a lot.

  • What do I actually get from a capacity assessment?

Direct contact time across one or two appointments, the validated tests, collateral from other clinicians where needed, and a written report to the proper standard. The report covers what you can do across each area of daily life and what support you need to close the gaps.

  • How does hand therapy work after surgery?

Hand therapy follows your surgeon's post-op plan — splint making, swelling and scar management, range of motion and tendon work, dexterity and grip rehab, and getting back to function. The therapist talks directly to the surgeon at each milestone. Complex tendon and nerve repairs run longer than straightforward post-op work.

  • What does kids' OT actually look like?

Validated kids' tools — sensory profile, fine-motor and movement-planning screens, handwriting assessment — plus watching them in the clinic, at home, or in the classroom. Therapy is play-based with measurable goals: self-regulation, getting ready to write and handwriting, self-care, school participation. We coach parents and carers as the main therapist between sessions.

  • Can you prescribe complex equipment and home modifications?

Yes. The full equipment pathway — trial, prescription, supplier liaison, and a written report to the right quoting standard — is core work. Home modifications run from grab rails through to ceiling hoists and bathroom and bedroom redesign, written to the right Australian Standard. The OT stays involved through contractor engagement and the post-install review.

  • What's the OT's role in adult cognitive rehab after stroke or brain injury?

Assessment of planning, attention, memory, and movement-planning using validated cognitive screens, then work that targets how the cognitive side affects day-to-day life — cooking, medication management, getting back to driving, work, and study. We coordinate with neurology, psychology, and speech pathology where needed.
